The Georgia Straight beautifully reports that “Cute meets grotesque in surreal irreverence” at the Juxtapose x Superflat exhibit in Vancouver.  Top photos are Christian Rex Van Minnens’ Coat of Arms and Mark Ryden’s Anatomia.  Robin Laurence continues to describe Coat of Arms:

Christian Rex van Minnen’s painting Coat of Arms—so sleekly detailed and tightly rendered that it resembles a Photoshopped image—conflates a raft of alluring and repellent images and motifs, including brilliantly coloured gummy worms that take on unexpected organic and sexual shapes.

This coat of arms also includes a hideously morphing death’s head, sharply pointed spears, and, yes, more viscera. Much more viscera.

Vancouver Magazine reports the Juxtapoz x Superflat exhibit: “This eclectic mix of artworks gives the exhibition a vibrant, dark-yet-colourful energy”.  A perfect description of Van Minnen’s “Coat of Arms.”

July 5  Montreal, je t’aime!

AVL International just returned from a delightfully perfect trip to Montreal for Matthew Namour‘s Grand Opening of the new gallery on St. Laurent in the old Port. It was so wonderful to meet Matthew, to see Yves Laroche again and all the work Alexis put into the show. (How wonderful to meet Jon ToddGary Taxali and later in the Village at the Street Art Festival, Tony TaylorJason BotkinMort by Wolves and Zoltan Veevaete.) We flew out with the possibility of another Ron English but were sidetracked and transfixed by Jean Labourdette‘s jaw-dropping piece, Time. Although they missed the opening, the next day we had the pleasure of watching Alexis unpack Tristan Eaton‘s two pieces which inspired his Coney Island mural, The Monster Within and The Fool That Follows. With the Jazz Festival in full swing, we wandered Montreal and saw incredible murals from Mural Fest in June by Chris Dyer, Melissa Del Pinto, Xray, House of Meggs, Felipe Pantone, and D*Face Art.  Alexis, Matthew, Thank you! Montreal, we love you! See you next year!
